Breaking Barriers: Inside Our First Accelerator for Disabled Founders
Breaking Barriers explores Foundervine’s first accelerator designed specifically for disabled founders, highlighting how intentional, accessible programme design can unlock untapped potential. In partnership with Lloyds, Breakthrough showcases a high-quality, investment-ready cohort and demonstrates how removing systemic barriers can drive stronger outcomes for founders and the wider ecosystem.
At Foundervine, we believe innovation should be accessible to everyone. Across the UK startup ecosystem, disabled founders remain significantly underrepresented, not due to lack of ambition or ability, but because of structural barriers that limit access to support, networks, and capital.
Breakthrough was created to address that gap. Delivered in partnership with Lloyds, it is our first accelerator dedicated to supporting disabled founders to scale their businesses and access the same opportunities as their peers.
Breakthrough is not about changing founders. It is about removing the barriers around them so they can fully participate and succeed.
The Problem: Untapped Potential in the Ecosystem
Disabled entrepreneurs represent a large and growing part of the UK population, yet they remain underserved by traditional startup support systems.
Research consistently shows that disabled founders are:
Less likely to access early-stage funding
Less connected to investor and peer networks
More likely to face structural challenges in standard programme formats
At the same time, many disabled founders are building resilient, innovative businesses, often shaped by lived experience and problem-solving at a systemic level.
This creates a clear gap in the ecosystem. High-potential founders exist, but the systems designed to support them are not always accessible or inclusive.
For investors and partners, this represents a missed opportunity to engage with a strong and underrepresented pipeline of businesses.
What We Delivered
Breakthrough is an Accessible Cohort-Led accelerator delivered over 8 weeks in a hybrid format.
The programme combined:
Expert-led masterclasses focused on growth and scaling
1:1 mentoring with operators, investors, and specialists
Peer learning within a high-quality founder cohort
A final showcase connecting founders with investors and ecosystem partners
Accessibility was built into delivery from the outset. Founders were able to engage in ways that worked for them, with flexible participation, accessible materials, and tailored support.
This approach does not just improve access. It improves outcomes.
A High-Quality, Investable Cohort
The strength of Breakthrough is reflected in the calibre of founders selected.
Over 250 applications were received
63% of businesses were female-led
80% of founders had already raised funding from angels or venture capital
56.7% of businesses were based outside London
These are established, revenue-generating businesses with traction, entering the programme to scale further.
For investors and partners, this represents a pipeline of founders who are already building strong businesses and are ready for their next stage of growth.
Impact at a Glance
Breakthrough delivered measurable outcomes across the cohort:
29 founders supported
£21,000 in grant funding distributed
Founders refined their investment strategies and strengthened their growth plans
Businesses improved their positioning across sales, marketing, and operations
Alongside these outcomes, one of the most valuable aspects of the programme was the peer network created. Founders built meaningful connections that continue beyond the programme.
Celebrating Our Grant Winners
As part of Breakthrough, founders competed for a £21,000 grant funding pot to accelerate their growth.
Each of these founders demonstrated strong commercial potential, clarity in their business model, and a clear plan for scaling.
Founder Perspective
The impact of Breakthrough is best understood through the experience of the founders themselves.
“Being part of the programme gave me the confidence to refine my pitch, build a strong financial model, and bring forward my next funding round much earlier than planned.” - Rebecca Waclawyj, Brighter Future Mediation
“What stood out was feeling part of the programme structure rather than having to adapt everything to fit around my own barriers.” - Linzi Sortain, A New Icon
Looking Ahead: Building a More Inclusive and Effective Pipeline
Breakthrough demonstrates what is possible when accessibility is embedded into programme design from the outset.
The implications go beyond a single programme.
For partners, this provides a clear model for how to engage underrepresented founder groups in a way that delivers measurable outcomes.
For investors, it highlights a pipeline of businesses that combine strong fundamentals with untapped potential.
For the ecosystem, it raises an important question. If accessibility improves outcomes for disabled founders, how many other founders are being unintentionally excluded by the way programmes are currently designed?
At Foundervine, this is an area we will continue to build on. By working with partners across finance, government, and industry, we aim to expand access, strengthen founder pipelines, and unlock opportunities that have historically been overlooked.
